September

I don’t normally send out this many newsletters but we have had a number of things come up since I did September’s calendar.

    So here’s the scoop:
  •         Outdoor Skills Day: Saturday September 24 from 9:30-1:30 at OLGC church hall. Girls will earn an outdoor skill try-it from another council. We will be doing this with another Brownie troop from St. Michaels. Lunch is included. Cost is $1 per person (including adults). YOU MUST SIGNUP AND PAY BY OUR MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 20. Permission slip is attached and can be returned at the meeting or at the beginning of the event.
  •         Be sure to check the sign up sheets for the October camping trip and the interest indicator for some of the other events – some of the events I may not be able to do (work and my Cadette troop) but if others are willing to be in charge of our group at the events we can work it out if there is something that girls really want to do. Sounds like it is going to be a busy year – and more things are coming. E.g. the Junior troop is hosting a Halloween party for other troops as part of one of their awards on October 28 – more details to follow.
  •         Investiture/rededication ceremony (when new girls get their pins and returning girls get a rededication patch) has been rescheduled for Tuesday September 27 instead of October. The ceremony will begin promptly at 6:30 but we would like the girls there by 6:15 to practice. The troops are providing the refreshments but we do need parents to help set up, serve refreshment and clean up. There is a sign up sheet at the meeting.
  •         Hurricane Katrina: I have checked the Girl Scout website to see how we can help other councils who have been affected. They have provided a list of what they would like (they have requested that we only send those items at this time). They have requested gift cards (in ten dollar increments) from national chain stores, duffle bags, backpacks (no metal frames), children’s books and games and school supplies. Last week the girls decided that they would like to collect school supplies. Since I ran into a bargain a couple of weeks ago, I have many plastic pencil boxes. I have started the boxes all off with a ruler, notepad and bookmark. If you would like to participate in this project, please take one or more of the boxes (I have more boxes if needed or we will only send what ones get filled and save boxes for another project) and fill it with additional supplies (suggestions include pens, pencils, erasers, glue sticks, pencil sharpeners, small stapler, scissors, crayons – just make sure that it fits in the box to make shipping easier). Please return the filled boxes by our meeting on October 4. We also discussed making a financial contribution from some of our troop funds but have not finalized a decision.
  •         At our October 4th meeting we will be having QSP training for girls and parents. This is our fall fund raising activity to help pay for troop expenses (I already spend over $60 for pins and patches for our investiture) or maybe make a contribution to the hurricane relief. Please try to attend the meeting so that you can get the information and sign permission slip. If you choose not to participate in the actual sale, you just have to check on the permission slip that you have received the information but do not wish to participate. The sale includes magazine subscriptions and candy and nut sales. For the past few years the troop has made approximately $400 profit from the sale each year.
  •         For one of our projects for a patch we will be working on everyone will need an empty toilet paper roll. Please try to bring it by October 4. If you have an extra, bring it in case someone forgot theirs.
  •         We do need a girl and an adult to volunteer to be on the planning committee for the area encampment in May. Each troop participating is supposed to have a representative at the planning meeting in November (date and time to be determined). If you are interested in volunteering, let me know.
  •         For those interested in taking leader training, here are some dates:
    •         Basic Leadership – About Girl Scouting (part A) at Salisbury PRC - Saturday Oct. 8 – 8:45-12:00 or Wednesday Nov. 9 – 6:45-10:00
    •         Brownie age level training at Salisbury PRC - Saturday Oct. 8 – 1:00-4:00 or Wednesday Nov. 16 - 6:45-10:00
  • Camp Training:
    •         Camp Todd: Oct. 28-30 (tents) or Feb. 24-26** (Choptank Lodge) or April 28-30 (tents)
    •         Sandy Pines (near Salisbury) April 22-24 (tents)
    •         ** February training is very good – excellent trainers plus an indoor site if you are not used to camping out.
